Campus Map Maker & Visitor Guides

A campus map helps people find the right gate, building and service. Connect official building names with familiar short names so new students, visitors and event guests can follow the same information.

Match building names to visitor tasks

Prepare a list of gates, academic buildings, the library, residences, dining, sports facilities and visitor parking. Confirm how official names, building numbers and commonly used names relate to each other. A guest should not have to guess whether two different labels refer to the same building.

An orientation map can emphasize registration and everyday services. A conference map can prioritize venues, reception and parking. Identify the main audience before setting label prominence. A single public map rarely needs to display every department and internal room.

Verify routes visitors can use

After creating the base map, check pedestrian entrances, walls, covered walkways, paths between buildings and restricted areas. A vehicle gate may differ from a pedestrian entrance. A line connecting two points on a map is not enough to confirm that a visitor can walk through.

Ask the campus team to verify accessible entrances, ramps and lift information. The generated base map is a design starting point. It cannot by itself establish that a route meets accessibility or emergency evacuation requirements; those decisions require the responsible site's verification.

Make the map easy to maintain

Building outlines work well for dense campus blocks, while separate illustrations can highlight distinctive landmarks. Leave room to update new buildings, temporary works and event locations. Include a content review date in the delivered map so teams know which version they are using.

Check building numbers, long names and legend text at the actual output size. Orientation handbooks, website images and on-campus information boards need different layouts. Export the required format and inspect the result rather than relying on an unchecked editor screenshot.

Common questions

Can I create a campus orientation map?

Yes. Organize registration, accommodation, dining, gates and help points with clear short names and symbols. Have the orientation team confirm temporary locations and routes.

Can this replace an emergency evacuation plan?

It should not be used as a substitute. A visitor map supports orientation and information display; an emergency plan needs applicable standards and review by the responsible professionals.
